Conquering Carnarvon: Why the Sandstone Wilderness is the Ultimate Vision RV Test
The Sandstone Wilderness is calling. Located in the heart of Central Queensland, Carnarvon Gorge is a place of towering white sandstone cliffs, lush hidden oases, and ancient Aboriginal rock art. It is spectacular, rugged, and—for the unprepared—incredibly punishing on a caravan.
At Vision RV, we don't just build vans for caravan parks; we build them for places like this. Here is why Carnarvon Gorge should be next on your list and how to tackle it like a pro.
The Journey: Beyond the Bitumen
Getting to the Gorge is part of the adventure. While the main access road is now sealed, the surrounding tracks in the Carnarvon National Park and the neighboring Sandstone Belt are where things get interesting. You’ll encounter steep climbs, river crossings, and those infamous inland corrugations that turn timber-framed vans into a pile of loose screws and rattling cabinets.
Why a Vision RV Thrives Here
Most travelers have to worry about their van "surviving" the trip. When you’re towing a Vision, you’re focused on the destination.
-
Dust Defence: The tracks out west are fine and powdery. Our Dust Suppression System (DSS) creates positive pressure inside the van, ensuring that when you arrive at your campsite, your bed and your kitchen are as clean as when you left the Sunshine Coast.
-
The "Esky" Advantage: The Queensland sun can be relentless. Because our vans are built with 100% timber-free, CNC-cut composite panels, they act like a high-performance Esky. While other vans are heat-soaking through alloy frames, your Vision stays significantly cooler inside.
-
Off-Grid Freedom: There are no "power sites" in the heart of the wilderness. With our Victron-powered electrical systems, you can run your fridge, lights, and fans indefinitely without ever glancing at a generator.

Vision "Pro" Tip: The Carnarvon Water Hack
If you’re heading into the Gorge for a week, water management is everything.
The Hack: Before you leave the bitumen, ensure your grey water tank is empty but your fresh tanks are full. To keep your fresh water tasting "Mountain Stream" crisp, add a tiny amount of food-grade hydrogen peroxide (3% concentration) to your tanks (about 30ml per 100L). It keeps the water oxygenated and prevents that "stale tank" taste during long off-grid stays.
Where to Stay
-
Carnarvon Gorge Camping Area: (Seasonal) Perfect for those who want to be right in the action during school holidays.
-
Takarakka Bush Resort: Open year-round, offering great facilities and a bit of "bush luxury" while still feeling tucked away in the trees.
-
Sandstone Park: The best choice for big off-roaders. It offers 360-degree views of the ranges and massive sites that let you appreciate the scale of the landscape.
Final Thoughts
Carnarvon Gorge isn't just a destination; it’s a bucket-list experience that demands a van capable of handling the extremes. If you’ve been dreaming of the Sandstone Wilderness, your Vision is already built to take you there.
